DO YOU HAVE ANCESTORS IN NEW YORK
Census of Colonial time; They began in 1690 but all are destroyed except for 1698.
Census Federal; They began in 1790. Statewide indexes are available for some census.
Census State; Began in 1795. Most census before 1875 were destroyed by fire, but some
counties have copies.
Many of the census can be obtained from familysearch catalog.

Churches in 1800s, : Methodist, Baptist, Presbyterian, Episcopal, Dutch Reform,
Congregational, Roman Catholic, society of Friends, Universalist,
Lutheran, Union, Christian, Unitarian, and Jewish.

Courts of Records; 1653-74 Courts of schouts and schepens
1665-83 Courts of Assized and courts of Sessions.

MILITARY: Colonial war, Revolutionary War (1775-1783), War of 1812-1815,
Mexican War (1846-1848, Civil War (1861-1865),Spanish-American War

PROBATE RECORDS: New York has a complicated history regarding records. Many courts
handled the records.
As of 1787 the Surrogate's Court recorded the probates.

VITAL RECORDS: Birth and death records began in 1880. There are some earler records.
Marriage 1753- most people published banns because license in most
cases took a month's wage.
Prerogative Courts granted marriage licenses.
New york state does not have early county marriage records. They are
found at town and city clerks.
HISTORY: 1609-1664 Dutch controled area.
1664-1776 English controled area
1683 Original counties were formed Albqany, Cornwall, Dukes, Dutchess, Kings,
New York, Queens, Orange,Richmond, Suffolk, Ulster, Westschester.
1731 Boundary between Monnecticut was resolved.
1769 Boundary between New Jerssey was settled
1773 Boundary between Massachusetts was settled.
1776 Loyalists moved from New York to Nova Scotia,British West Indies.
1791 Boundary between Virginia was settled.
1796 State capital moved from New York to Albany.

THE LAND GRANT PROCESS BY COLONIAL GOVERNMENT
First step- was to complete an Entry(Petition or application) and file with the colonial
governor. Many were lost.
Second step- With the approval of the Entry a Warrant was issued for the land. A Warrant
is an order or directive for the "lay-out"of the lands to be granted.
Third step- The land was surveyed and measured to meet the requirments of Entry
and Warrant. Then a Plat (some times call a survay) was made. A Plat
is a map of the land that has been survayed.
Example: 50acres...assigned to him....in the county of Giles on the south side
of East River and bounded as followeth, To wit Beginning at a beech on the
bank of the River runing thence 54 0 W 54 poles (rods) to 4 Spanish oaks on
the top of a hill S 66 o E 34poles to tw0 white oaks on the side of a hill.....
W 39 poles to down the clefts and crossing the River to a large Sedar tree
thence up the River with the meanders there of and binding thereon 129
poles to the beginning, variation three degrees east.
Fourth step-A Licenses was issued granting permission to use the land by applicant.
Fifth step-A patent was issued to the owner (grantee).
